Wildflowers, Moose, and Miles of Bliss: Why the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail Belongs on Your Anchorage Bucket List

There are trails, and then there are experiences that quietly rearrange your sense of what a city can be. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is firmly in the second category. Stretching eleven glorious miles from downtown Anchorage all the way out to Kincaid Park, this paved multi-use path runs right along the edge of Cook Inlet, and it delivers the kind of scenery that makes you stop mid-stride, squint at the horizon, and wonder if you accidentally wandered onto a film set.

I first stepped onto the trail at the Elderberry Park entrance, just a short walk from the west end of 5th Avenue downtown. Within five minutes, the hum of the city softened into something almost cinematic — the inlet stretched wide and silver to my left, Denali floated in the distance on a clear day like a rumor you finally believe, and across the water the Alaska Range lined up in a way that felt frankly unreasonable for a Tuesday afternoon.

What makes this trail genuinely special is how democratic it is. Cyclists in full kit zip past families pushing strollers. Joggers share the path with older couples out for a slow, deliberate walk. In winter, the trail transforms into a cross-country ski corridor, groomed and peaceful, with frost-covered birches arching overhead. No matter the season, no matter your fitness level, this trail has room for you.

Wildlife sightings here are not a maybe — they are almost a certainty. Moose are frequent and entirely unbothered by human traffic. Beluga whales have been spotted from the trail during summer months, cruising the shallow inlet waters in small pods. Shorebirds pick along the mudflats during migration, and if you time your visit for late spring or early summer, the wildflowers along the bluff sections are extravagant — fireweed, wild geranium, lupine in full purple bloom.

The stretch between Earthquake Park and Point Woronzof is my personal favorite. Earthquake Park itself tells the story of the devastating 1964 Good Friday earthquake through interpretive signs, and the bluff viewpoint at Point Woronzof offers what might be the single best sunset vantage point in all of Anchorage. Bring a thermos of something warm, sit on the bench, and watch the sky go orange and pink over the inlet. It costs nothing. It is unforgettable.

Parking is available at Westchester Lagoon, Earthquake Park, and Kincaid Park if you want to drive to a midpoint. Bike rentals are easy to find near the downtown end if you want to cover the full distance without the leg work. The trail is well-maintained year-round by the Municipality of Anchorage, and restrooms are available at several points along the route.

Whether you have two hours or a full afternoon to spare, the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is the kind of place that makes you fall a little bit in love with Anchorage — all eleven miles of it.
