The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office has identified the remains of a body found in a rural hay barn in 1986, closing a 40-year-old cold case. The remains were transported to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for analysis, but no identification was made at the time.
Cold Case Solved
Investigators at the sheriff’s office used modern DNA technology to identify the body as Clifton Womack, who was reported missing in Ohio in 1985. Womack suffered from schizophrenia and his family believes he was hitchhiking back to their previous home in California at the time of his death.
The sheriff’s office says Womack’s death is still undetermined, but there is no evidence of criminal activity. The sheriff’s office is grateful to provide closure to Womack’s family after four decades.
