The San Diego Padres have agreed to a minor league deal with veteran infielder Luis Rengifo, according to The Athletic.
Rengifo, 29, was released by the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, one week after being designated for assignment. He batted just .205 with no homers and 19 RBIs in 57 games with the Brewers.
Rengifo could factor in for the Padres at second base – he has 341 career starts at the position — if he is promoted to the majors. San Diego has been using Gold Glove right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. at the position with Jake Cronenworth sidelined while Manny Machado is entrenched at third base.
In 730 big league games, Rengifo has a .246 career average with 62 homers and 249 RBIs.
