I’m Almost Home Animal Rescue in El Paso, Texas, will permanently close its doors within the next couple of weeks. The founder, Diane Avery, is asking the community for help in finding homes for the 40 remaining dogs.
Rescue Faces Challenges
Avery started the rescue with just one dog 10 years ago and has since seen significant changes. She notes that more dogs are on the streets due to a gap in spaying and neutering care during the COVID pandemic. Additionally, more people are looking for small breeds that are easier to manage. The El Paso and Las Cruces shelters are overwhelmed with intakes, forcing them to put down healthy dogs with nowhere else to go.
Avery says she can no longer bear the cost of housing so many animals, citing the high expenses of food and healthcare. The rescue needs volunteers to walk the dogs on weekends between 9 and 11:30 a.m. The dogs available for adoption are listed on the rescue’s website, and the community can also help by adopting, fostering, or donating to local shelters.
