Bexar County commissioners have voted to issue refunds to 57 drivers who were cited by a now-illegal Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) camera system. The system, which was used to monitor speeds and issue citations, was deemed illegal by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton earlier this year.
The LIDAR system was capable of monitoring the speeds of drivers in up to five lanes of traffic at a time and snapping photos of those who were exceeding the speed limit. However, after challenges by a state lawmaker and Bexar County’s district attorney, the system was ruled to be in violation of Texas law.
The 57 drivers who were cited and paid fines ranging from $146 to $336 will receive a total of $11,480 in refunds. It is unclear when or how the drivers will be reimbursed.
