The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has announced a new agriculture complex along Hwy. 288, which will be the largest single facilities investment in the rodeo’s more than 90-year history. Construction is expected to take several years, with the goal of opening the complex in time for the 2029 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Facility Details
The new facility is designed to support livestock shows, horse show competitions, junior and open breeding shows, archery competitions, agricultural mechanics, commercial auctions, and educational contests, including 4-H and intercollegiate programming. Some livestock events will continue to be held at Reliant Center.
Chris Boleman, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo president and CEO, said the project is about preparing the organization for its next chapter while continuing to support students, exhibitors, and families. “This represents the largest investment in rodeo history and a profound commitment to the future of our event, educational opportunities, and agriculture,” Boleman said.
Community Impact
Outside of the annual rodeo, the complex is expected to host year-round educational programming, committee meetings, fundraisers, auctions, galas, and other agricultural, youth, and Western heritage events. The facility will also include modern, climate-controlled spaces meant to improve the experience for animal exhibitors and families by reducing travel distances and wait times during move-in and move-out.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the project will expand educational opportunities and strengthen Houston’s role as a destination for agriculture and major events without placing a burden on taxpayers. Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones also called the project an investment in students and the future of Harris County, saying the rodeo has supported the community for nearly a century through scholarships, youth competitions, and leadership development.
