Mabrey’s 53-Point Masterpiece Powers Tempo Past Sparks 125-97

Marina Mabrey put on one of the most breathtaking individual performances in WNBA history Thursday night at Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, pouring in a staggering 53 points to lead the Toronto Tempo to a dominant 125-97 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks.

Mabrey’s scoring outburst was the defining story of the evening, as the Tempo’s guard was virtually unstoppable from start to finish. Her 53-point night carried Toronto to a 28-point margin of victory, a result that underscored just how thoroughly the home side controlled the contest from wire to wire.

The supporting cast did its part as well. Point guard Julie Allemand orchestrated the Toronto offense with remarkable efficiency, distributing 14 assists to keep the Tempo’s attack flowing and ensure Mabrey and her teammates were consistently finding open looks. Laura Juskaite anchored the glass for Toronto, hauling in 12 rebounds to give the Tempo a consistent presence in the paint throughout the game.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, struggled to generate any consistent offensive rhythm. The Sparks shot just 43 percent from the field, connecting on 33 of 77 field goal attempts, and were particularly ineffective from beyond the arc, hitting only 11 of 38 three-point tries for a 29-percent clip. That inability to knock down perimeter shots proved costly against a Toronto team that was firing on all cylinders offensively.

Dearica Hamby was the lone bright spot for Los Angeles, finishing with a game-high 21 points and 9 rebounds to lead all Sparks players in both categories. Her double-double effort showed resilience, but it was far from enough to keep pace with the Tempo’s relentless attack. Erica Wheeler chipped in 5 assists to pace Los Angeles in that department, though the Sparks as a team managed just 20 assists on the night.

Los Angeles did show some grit at the free-throw line, converting 20 of 26 attempts for a 77-percent clip, and limited their turnovers to just 8 on the night. However, the Sparks were outworked on the boards, finishing with only 30 total rebounds — 8 offensive and 22 defensive — a figure that reflected their inability to generate second-chance opportunities against a Toronto team that was in complete control.

The Tempo’s offense, by contrast, hummed with precision. Allemand’s 14 assists pointed to a team that moved the ball unselfishly and created quality looks at every turn, while Mabrey’s historic scoring night gave Toronto an offensive ceiling that Los Angeles simply had no answer for.

The 28-point victory at Coca-Cola Coliseum was a commanding statement from the Tempo, who demonstrated both offensive firepower and organizational depth. For the Sparks, the loss exposed persistent shooting struggles from three-point range and a defensive vulnerability that allowed Mabrey to reach a scoring total rarely seen at any level of professional basketball.

Toronto’s faithful crowd at Coca-Cola Coliseum witnessed something special on this June evening — a performance from Mabrey that will be talked about for years to come, and a Tempo team that looks every bit like a force to be reckoned with in the WNBA.
