The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington was vandalized this month when a liner along the bottom was cut with a sharp knife or razor, according to the National Park Service. The damage was reported to the U.S. Park Police on June 9.
Investigation Underway
The police report indicates that the caulk over the foam sealant was cut and the delaminating surface material was destroyed. Additionally, about 70 fence post tops were thrown into the pool.
The National Park Service plans to begin draining the Reflecting Pool after Independence Day celebrations to conduct repairs, including assessing and repairing any damage to the lining.
Renovation Controversy
The Reflecting Pool renovation has been controversial, with Congressional Democrats calling for formal investigations into the project. The renovation was completed in early June, but the pool’s water has been plagued by an algae bloom and pieces of the new coating have appeared to be peeling off the bottom.
