New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised the results of yesterday’s primary elections, during which all eight of his endorsed candidates won their races, calling the sweep a clear sign that voters want an “affordability agenda.”
Working-Class Politics
Mamdani argued that the election results show New York voters are looking for a shift toward working-class politics. “What we saw yesterday evening were Democrats across the city turning out and voting for a new kind of politics,” Mamdani said.
The victories included five state legislative candidates alongside key wins by candidates named Brad, Claire Valdez, and Darializa. According to Mamdani, Valdez will become the first Mexican American and Indigenous woman to represent her district, while Darializa will be the first Afro-Latina Dominican woman to represent hers.
Criticism and Response
However, host Chris Hayes challenged the idea that the victories represented a purely working-class movement, citing voter data published by The New York Times. Hayes noted a clear correlation between the success of Mamdani’s backed candidates and neighborhoods with higher levels of household income and college degrees.
Mamdani dismissed the characterization, stating that neither Valdez, who won her race by 20 points, nor Darializa could have secured their nominations without substantial support from communities of color.
