Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has expressed ‘profound differences’ with Darializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old democratic socialist who recently won a primary election in New York. Avila Chevalier, who was endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Shapiro’s Comments
In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Shapiro stated that he has ‘profound differences’ with Avila Chevalier based on her views, which include support for abolishing police, prisons, and borders, as well as seizing private property and nationalizing major industries. Shapiro also noted that Avila Chevalier has questioned Israel’s right to exist.
Avila Chevalier has been involved in pro-Palestinian activism, including attending a rally the day after Hamas’ attack on Israel in October 2023. The rally was widely condemned by politicians, including Brad Lander, another Mamdani-backed candidate.
Shapiro’s Position
Shapiro, who is running for reelection and is a potential 2028 presidential contender, emphasized the importance of Democrats having a clear vision and values. He argued that the party needs to focus on turning words into action to improve people’s lives.
As a defender of Israel and an advocate for a two-state solution, Shapiro has backed his own slate of Pennsylvania Democrats in seeking to flip Republican-held US House seats. He has been open about how his faith and family guide him in his life of service.
