Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has vetoed a bill that would have tightened identification requirements for voting by mail. The requirements would have begun in 2027 and would have required voters to upload a photo ID and electronic signature through a new state online portal or mail a copy of their ID.
Background
A photo ID is already required for early voting and on Election Day, and has been since 2023. In his veto message, DeWine said the bill would create more burdens for voters without improving election security.
Republican lawmakers say they’re disappointed by the decision. It is not yet clear whether they’ll try to override the governor’s veto. Ohio voters will still decide this November whether to add photo ID requirements to the state constitution. That proposed amendment would not change the current rules for absentee or mail-in voting.
