Europe is bracing for another day of extreme heat, with multiple countries expecting triple-digit temperatures. A heat dome, a vast area of stagnant high pressure, is trapping heat and causing record-breaking temperatures.
Heat-Related Deaths
The heat wave has already caused hundreds of deaths, with 212 people dying in Spain over the last four days. In France, at least 48 people have drowned seeking relief from the heat, and three children have been found dead in hot cars. Italy has reported at least five heat-related deaths.
Temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more in the UK, which is under a rare red extreme heat warning. France is also expecting scorching temperatures, with red alerts covering 72 of the country’s 96 mainland regions.
Relief in Sight
The heat is expected to ease towards the weekend in the UK and France, but other parts of the continent are bracing for extreme temperatures over the weekend as the heat slowly moves eastward.
