A citywide scavenger hunt in Albuquerque is giving families a fun way to learn about water conservation and sustainable living. The Rio Rally, organized by the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, features 28 participating locations across the city, including libraries and museums.
How it Works
Participants can sign up individually or as teams and visit different sites to collect stickers and earn points. At each location, players scan a QR code to receive a password, then share that passphrase with an employee to receive a unique sticker. Participants can also earn points for sustainable actions such as walking, biking or taking the bus, carrying reusable water bottles and making other environmentally friendly choices.
So far, 128 people have signed up to take part. Organizers say the event is designed to do more than provide a fun summer activity. It also encourages people to think about how small, everyday choices can help conserve water and protect community resources.
"We make a difference every day, and we can choose what difference we want to make, and doing things together and finding small ways to reuse things to just conserve material or not waste food," said Jeff Tuttle, education outreach coordinator with the Water Authority.
Prizes include family passes to Explora, the Natural History Museum and an Isotopes game. The Rio Rally runs through July 12.
