The US Senate has reversed its stance on President Trump’s war powers in relation to Iran, with a late-night vote rejecting a measure to limit the president’s authority. This comes after President Trump expressed frustration with Senate Republicans who voted for an Iran war powers resolution on Tuesday.
Shift in Votes
Republican Senators Rand Paul and Bill Cassidy, who had previously voted to rein in the president’s war powers on Iran, changed their votes. Paul voted present, while Cassidy voted against advancing the resolution. Other Republican Senators, such as Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, continued to support the resolution.
President Trump welcomed the vote on social media, noting the shifts in votes and stating that the outcome puts Iran on notice. Earlier in the day, Cassidy had a tense exchange with the president during a Senate GOP lunch, where he expressed his desire for more information on the conflict in Iran.
Cassidy later received a briefing from Vice President JD Vance and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, which seemed to alleviate some of his concerns. Senator Paul also stated that his opinion on the war had not changed but that he was giving consideration to the president’s negotiating position.
