A Democratic strategist, Melissa DeRosa, has accused Democratic socialist candidates of being ‘parasites’ that leech off the Democratic Party and could ultimately kill it. DeRosa made the comment on ‘Special Report with Bret Baier’ as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani continued to campaign for openly socialist candidates in the New York primary elections.
Socialist Candidates
DeRosa specifically mentioned political organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier, who is challenging New York Rep. Adriano Espaillat. Chevalier has faced backlash over her views on abolishing prisons and open borders, including opposing deportations for illegal immigrants guilty of breaking criminal law.
DeRosa pointed out that socialist candidates like Chevalier are targeting Democrats in safe blue seats, rather than trying to win in purple or red districts. This strategy, according to DeRosa, is an attempt to take over the Democratic Party and push it further to the left.
Mamdani has also endorsed other far-left candidates, including Assemblymember Claire Valdez and former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who have pushed for policies like the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
