Alder Caroline Tanbee Smith announced she will resign from her position on August 5th due to her new home being outside of Ward 9’s boundaries.
Resignation Details
Smith made the announcement in her latest email to constituents, stating that she and her fiancée have purchased a house two and a half blocks outside of Ward 9. According to the City Charter, an Alder must reside within their ward to serve.
Smith expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve Ward 9 and her commitment to the city of New Haven. She will continue to work on various projects, including the I-91 Underpass Park Project and the Best City to Start Coalition.
A special election will be held within 45 days of Smith’s resignation to fill the vacant position.
