University of New Mexico alumni and community members are urging Provost Barbara Rodriguez to reject the contract renewal of School of Law Dean Camille Carey. Critics allege Carey is prioritizing rankings and out-of-state recruitment over the school’s mission to serve New Mexico students and communities.
Concerns Over Admissions and Investigations
Concerns were raised about delayed investigations into sexual misconduct and the exclusion of local students from the admissions process. According to the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association, applications from New Mexico residents to the UNM School of Law dropped from 600 to 216 this year, and out-of-state students now make up one-third of the incoming class.
Jacob Griego, a recent graduate, expressed concerns that New Mexico students are being overlooked in the admissions process. "I personally know of individuals who have applied to UNM Law and were either waitlisted or flat-out denied," Griego said. "New Mexico students should remain at the center of New Mexico’s only law school."
The university responded with a statement acknowledging the concerns raised by some members of the community regarding the School of Law. The University of New Mexico is committed to the School of Law’s mission of educating lawyers who serve New Mexico’s diverse communities.
