80‑Year‑Old Mission Paletero Keeps San Francisco Streets Sweet

For more than two decades, the Mission District’s streets have been flavored by the bright‑colored ice‑pop cart of Alberto Sanchez. At 80 years old, the former Mexican shoeshine boy works seven days a week, calling out “¡Paletas! ¡Ricas paletas!” as he walks along 21st Street toward Valencia, offering strawberry, coconut, pineapple and a host of other flavors.

From Mexico City to the Mission

Sanchez first learned the value of hard work at age 11 in Colonia Portales, Mexico City, polishing shoes for policemen, businessmen and lawyers after his father gave him a wooden shoeshine box. He continued that work ethic throughout his life, taking jobs at a car wash, a hotel and a restaurant after he migrated to the United States in 2002 at age 54.

Although he tried other employment, he never stopped selling paletas, even if only a day or two a week. About ten years ago, faced with difficulty finding another job at his age and encouraged by loyal customers, he returned to the cart full‑time.

A Daily Routine That Keeps Him Young

“My legs are tired now. I just don’t have the same energy as before. But I gotta keep the energy up. I gotta work because that’s how I sustain myself,” Sanchez said in Spanish, adding that the job keeps him feeling young. He averages about 60 paletas a day, with coconut the most popular flavor.

Customers range from families with young children to longtime neighborhood regulars. Sanchez says the smiles he brings to kids are the best part of his work, and the physical activity of walking the route helps him stay fit.

Challenges and Hopes

Despite his stamina, Sanchez admits he worries about the future. He is tired and hopes not to become a burden to his children. He also wishes he could speak English fluently, a skill he believes would make his daily interactions easier.

His story reflects the broader immigrant experience in San Francisco: perseverance, adaptation, and a deep love for community. While many older workers face age‑related employment barriers, Sanchez’s dedication shows how small‑scale entrepreneurship can provide both livelihood and a sense of purpose.

Why the Mission Still Loves Its Paletero

The Mission District, known for its vibrant street life and cultural diversity, has long embraced vendors who add flavor—literally and figuratively—to the neighborhood. Sanchez’s cart, shaded by a ceanothus bush on hot days, has become a familiar sight for residents and visitors alike.

As the city continues to evolve, stories like Sanchez’s remind readers that the everyday labor of longtime residents helps preserve the character of neighborhoods. Whether it’s a child’s delighted grin after a bite of coconut paleta or the rhythmic chant of “¡Paletas!” echoing down the block, the simple act of selling frozen treats sustains both a family and a community.

Looking Ahead

While Sanchez does not know how many more years he will keep the cart moving, his commitment to the Mission remains steadfast. He hopes his story will inspire younger generations to value hard work, family support, and the joy of serving neighbors.
