8‑Foot Alligator Turns Manatee County Driveway Into Unexpected Guest Spot

When Pennsylvania‑born Allan and Sandy Hofmann stepped outside their new Manatee County home last week, they were greeted by a sight no homeowner expects: an eight‑foot alligator sprawled on the pavement next to their truck and golf cart.

Unexpected visitor prompts quick action

“We thought it was a prank at first,” Allan said, recalling the moment he called the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. “It was just sitting there, not moving, as if it owned the place.” The couple, who relocated to the Gulf Coast in March, described the creature as weighing between 300 and 350 pounds.

Local law enforcement dispatched Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers, who in turn sent a team of professional alligator trappers to the scene. The trappers, experienced in safely handling large reptiles, secured the animal and prepared to relocate it to a more suitable habitat.

Alligator safety and community awareness

Manatee County officials reminded residents that alligators are native to Florida’s wetlands and can occasionally wander onto private property, especially during cooler months when they seek warm surfaces. They urged homeowners to keep yards clear of debris, maintain proper fencing, and report any sightings promptly.

“We’re grateful the Hofmanns called us right away,” said a spokesperson for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. “Our trappers are trained to handle these situations safely, protecting both the public and the animal.”

What happens after removal?

The agency did not disclose the exact relocation site, but standard practice is to move large alligators to protected wetlands where they can thrive without posing a risk to people. The Hofmanns expressed relief that the situation was resolved without injury.

“We’re just glad everyone is safe,” Sandy added. “We’ll definitely be more vigilant about our surroundings now.”

Living with Florida’s wildlife

Florida residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local wildlife guidelines. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers resources on coexisting with alligators, including tips on securing trash, avoiding feeding wildlife, and recognizing signs of an alligator’s presence.

For anyone who encounters a similar situation, the recommended steps are:

  • Stay at a safe distance and do not approach the animal.
  • Call 911 or the local sheriff’s office immediately.
  • Provide clear details about the location and size of the animal.

By acting quickly and following official guidance, homeowners can help ensure that both people and wildlife remain safe.
