71-year-old Crestline resident attacked and beaten with bat, suspect at large

Therese Garcia, a 71‑year‑old resident of Crestline, California, is slowly recovering from a brutal assault that left her with a brain injury, multiple broken bones and deep lacerations. According to her daughter, Abbie Garcia, the attack was carried out with an aluminum baseball bat by a 26‑year‑old man who had been staying in Garcia’s home.

How the tragedy unfolded

Garcia, who enjoys sitting on her porch to chat with neighbors, was approached by the young man while he was walking near her house. He claimed his belongings had been stolen while camping. Moved by his story, Garcia invited him to stay with her, offering the kindness she is known for in the community.

After roughly two weeks, the visitor began to assert control over the household. When Garcia asked him to leave, the situation escalated dramatically. The man returned that night and began beating Garcia with a metal baseball bat while she slept. The assault continued for hours, with Garcia briefly regaining consciousness only to be struck again, eventually losing consciousness completely.

Aftermath and police response

When the assault ended, the attacker fled, taking Garcia’s keys, phone and e‑bike. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Erik Eduardo Navarro, a 26‑year‑old resident of Orange County. Authorities have issued a public appeal for anyone who has seen Navarro or has information about his whereabouts to contact the sheriff’s office at 909‑890‑4904.

Garcia’s daughter said her mother is now under medical care, focusing on recovery from the extensive injuries. The community has rallied around the family, offering prayers and support in line with the town’s strong Christian values and commitment to caring for its elders.

Community concerns and safety reminders

This incident has raised concerns among Crestline residents about safety and the importance of vigilance when offering assistance to strangers. While compassion is a cornerstone of the community, local leaders remind citizens to balance kindness with prudent safety measures, especially when inviting unknown individuals into their homes.

Law enforcement officials emphasize that the suspect remains at large and that any tip, no matter how small, could be crucial to apprehending him and preventing further harm. They also encourage residents to report suspicious activity promptly.

Looking ahead

As Garcia continues her recovery, the Crestline community is praying for her swift healing and for justice to be served. The incident underscores the need for continued community awareness and cooperation with law‑enforcement to keep the town safe for all, especially its most vulnerable members.
