A local businessman, Nathanael Toms, is leading an effort to construct the world’s tallest flagpole in southwest Missouri. The flagpole will stand at 700 feet tall and feature a large United States flag on top, visible from 30 miles away.
Uniting Americans
Toms’ goal is to create a symbol of unity for the nation. He believes that the flagpole will serve as a reminder of what Americans have in common, rather than their differences. The project’s website, oldgloryrising.org, states that the flagpole will be a place where people can come together and reflect on their shared values.
The flagpole will be funded in part by the sale of bricks with donors’ names on them. The bricks will be placed around the base of the flagpole, which will be situated on a mound for engineering and support reasons. The architect for the project is the Buxton Kubik Dodd Design Collective, based in Springfield.
Phases of the Project
The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase will involve the construction of the flagpole, and the second phase will focus on building a museum near the flagpole. The museum will showcase the history of the United States flag and serve as a community center.
Toms hopes to complete the project within two years, although he acknowledges that it may take longer. He is confident that the project will be a success and will become a source of pride for the community.
The full launch of the campaign will take place on July 10 at the Ozark Mountain Sports Complex, with a fireworks show to follow. Toms invites everyone to attend and be a part of this historic event.
