49ers owner Jed York suspended six games by NFL for personal conduct violation

The National Football League announced Friday that San Francisco 49ers principal owner Jed York will miss six games and pay a $500,000 fine for violating the league’s personal‑conduct policy. York was arrested earlier this year in Ohio during a prostitution sting conducted by the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.

Details of the arrest and plea

Police said York attempted to pay $160 for sex with a woman he believed was a prostitute. He was booked, posted a $5,000 bond, and initially faced a charge of engaging in prostitution. Prosecutors later reduced the charge to disorderly conduct. York pleaded no contest to that charge and to possessing criminal tools for using his phone to respond to an undercover online advertisement.

He received a one‑day jail sentence for each offense, to be served concurrently, and was credited with the day already served. In addition to the league fine, York was ordered to pay a $1,150 court fine, forfeit the $160 he attempted to spend (which was turned over to the human‑trafficking task force), and complete an online education course.

League response and York’s statement

The NFL credited York with three games already served and placed him on a six‑game suspension, making him eligible to return on Oct. 20, after the 49ers’ Oct. 19 matchup with Washington. The league’s fall meetings begin that same day in New York.

York released a statement through the 49ers organization, accepting the punishment and apologizing to his family, the team’s players, coaches, staff, fans, and partners. “This was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility,” he said, adding that he hopes the incident will teach his sons the importance of owning up to failures.

Historical context

Other NFL owners have faced similar discipline. The late Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was suspended six games and fined $500,000 after a guilty plea for driving while impaired in 2014. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was investigated but not punished after a 2019 arrest for allegedly paying for sex; the charge was later dismissed due to procedural violations.

York, who assumed day‑to‑day control of the 49ers in 2008 and became principal owner in 2024, has overseen the team’s rise to a consistent contender since hiring coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch in 2017. Under his ownership, the 49ers have appeared in three Super Bowls, built Levi’s Stadium, and hosted major events such as two Super Bowls, a World Cup match, and a College Football Playoff title game.
