The National Football League announced Friday that San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York will serve a six‑game suspension and pay a $500,000 fine for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy. Three of the games have already been counted toward the suspension, meaning York could return to team duties on Oct. 20.
Arrest and charges
York was taken into custody by the East Palestine police department in cooperation with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force on Aug. 23. According to police, he responded to an online advertisement for prostitution and traveled to a residential trailer park where the sting was set up. He was found with $160 on his person.
York later pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges: disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools – the latter referring to the cell phone he used to arrange the meeting. He was sentenced to two days in the Columbiana County Jail, received credit for one day already served, was ordered to complete an online anti‑prostitution course, and fined $1,150.
League response
The NFL said York’s suspension and fine were the result of a thorough review of the incident. “During the time the league’s investigation has been proceeding, York has stayed away from the 49ers’ first three regular‑season games, as well as from NFL league meetings,” the league statement read. “Those three missed games are counted toward his suspension, and he may return on Oct. 20.”
York’s apology
In a written statement, York expressed remorse, calling his actions an “inexcusable mistake” and taking full responsibility. He said the episode does not reflect his values or the example he wants to set for his family. “While I fell short of the model I want to set for my sons, I now hope to show them the importance of owning up to one’s failures, and that even our worst moments teach us to be better,” York wrote.
York also emphasized that leading the 49ers is a privilege he does not take lightly and pledged to work to regain the trust of fans, players, coaches, and partners.
Financial impact
When the NFL fine, court fine, and the $160 seized during the sting are combined, York’s total cost for the incident exceeds $501,000.
Next steps for the 49ers
The 49ers organization has not announced any immediate operational changes related to York’s suspension. The team will continue its season under the direction of its front office and coaching staff while York remains away from day‑to‑day activities.
The NFL has scheduled a league meeting for Oct. 20‑22, during which reporters are expected to be present. York has not indicated whether he will attend in person.
