49ers dominate Rams 27-7 in NFL’s historic first game in Australia

San Francisco celebrated a landmark victory on Friday as the 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 27‑7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The game, the NFL’s first regular‑season contest in Australia, drew 100,021 fans – the seventh‑largest regular‑season crowd in league history.

Offensive firepower led by Brock Purdy

Brock Purdy delivered a masterful performance, completing 15 of 24 passes for 205 yards and three touchdown throws. He connected with Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel for all of San Francisco’s scores. Purdy’s poise in the early minutes, despite a few interceptions, set the tone for a dominant second half.

Kyren Williams added a historic footnote, rushing for a five‑yard touchdown that became the NFL’s first Australian touchdown. The run opened the second quarter and sparked a surge of energy among the packed stadium.

Defensive stand against Matthew Stafford

San Francisco’s defense forced veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford into a modest 15‑of‑25 passing night, limiting him to 155 yards. The Niners held the Rams’ high‑powered offense to a single score and even stopped Stafford on a fourth‑down quarterback sneak in the third quarter.

Rams’ defensive star Myles Garrett, the reigning AP Defensive Player of the Year, was largely invisible after missing much of training camp with lingering aches, recording no tackles.

Coaches’ perspectives

Purdy praised his team’s preparation, saying, “We played our style of football, respected the guys on the other side, and executed our plays.” He added that the teams will meet again later in the season, promising another competitive matchup.

Rams head coach Sean McVay acknowledged the defeat, noting, “They out‑played us in every facet. This was a humbling day for us. We’ll learn from it and get better.”

Travel and preparation differences

Much of the pre‑game conversation centered on the contrasting preparation methods. The 49ers arrived in Melbourne a week early, allowing players to adjust their body clocks and engage with local fans. The Rams, however, stayed on California time until less than two days before kickoff, a factor McVay suggested may have contributed to the sluggish start.

Looking ahead

San Francisco will host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 20, while the Rams travel to face the New York Giants on Monday, Sept. 21. Both teams will look to build on their performances as the NFL season progresses.
