Columbus is preparing for the 36th annual Fountain City Classic, a HBCU football rivalry scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium, according to WTVM.
Albany State University and Fort Valley State University will face off, a matchup that WTVM says draws a crowd of 35,000 to 40,000 people each year.
Columbus Sports Council executive director Craig Howard told WTVM the event is expected to bring more than $2 million in economic impact, providing a significant opportunity for small businesses, restaurants and retailers in uptown Columbus.
Fans are already setting up tailgates around the stadium, and Howard noted that the three‑hour game will be followed by continued festivities, allowing visitors to enjoy local dining and shopping options.
Beyond the game, a series of community events will run throughout the week. Thursday evening will host the 19th annual Cufflinks and Pearls and Leaders of Today and Tomorrow networking mixer, which committee member Jatavia O’Neal described to WTVM as “about collaborating, connecting, and fostering relationships that go beyond the night of the event.”
Friday’s schedule includes the 33rd annual “Close the Gap” Golf Classic. WTVM reported that proceeds support the Close the Gap Scholarship Fund, which helps students cover books, tuition, housing and other expenses. Marketing co‑chair Jerry Speakman told the outlet the fund “closes the gap” for students who fall short financially.
The classic’s parade is also returning, featuring high‑school bands, middle‑school dancers and community groups. O’Neal said the parade “brings back so many memories” for Columbus natives and Albany State alumni.
Long‑time attendees expressed enthusiasm. Carla Curry, a Columbus resident, told WTVM she has attended the Classic for over 30 years, calling it “family, fun, food, and fellowship.” Albany State alumna Eva Smith added, “Everybody is pumped up and is ready to go. It’s just very exciting.”
Local residents such as Gordon Griswould said, “We get excited about the tailgate… we try to come down early,” highlighting the community’s enthusiasm for pre‑game festivities.
WTVM noted that high‑school students can begin applying for multiple scholarships offered through the Classic later this month.
**What’s next:** The networking mixer takes place Thursday evening, the golf classic is Friday, and the football game kicks off Saturday at 2 p.m. A full schedule of events is available on the Fountain City Classic website.
