2026 Emmy Awards Set for Sept. 14 with Mariska Hargitay Hosting Solo

The Television Academy announced that the 78th Emmy Awards will take place on Monday, Sept. 14, in Los Angeles. Long‑time “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star Mariska Hargitay will serve as the ceremony’s solo host, becoming the first woman to do so alone in fifteen years.

Host and historic milestone

Hargitay, who has portrayed Olivia Benson since 1999, is herself an Emmy winner, having captured Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for the role in 2006. Her selection as host underscores the Academy’s effort to spotlight seasoned talent while highlighting a notable gender milestone.

Top‑nominated programs

Drama series The Pitt leads the field with 25 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Noah Wyle. Comedy series Hacks follows closely with 24 nominations, setting a new record for the most nominations ever received by a single comedy series in one year.

Other heavily nominated shows include Widow’s Bay (19 nominations), Pluribus (18 nominations) and Beef (16 nominations). The slate also features 28 first‑time performer nominees, reflecting fresh talent across the industry.

Recent winners and notable moments

Earlier this month, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards recognized a range of achievements. Sabrina Carpenter earned her first Emmy as both executive producer and performer on “The Muppet Show,” which won Outstanding Variety Special (pre‑recorded). The late Rob Reiner was honored posthumously with Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Albert on “The Bear.”

Hargitay added two Emmys to her résumé for the HBO documentary “My Mom Jayne: A Film by Mariska Hargitay,” winning Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program and Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

Music star Bad Bunny secured seven awards for his Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show, including Outstanding Variety Special (live). Alan Cumming was recognized as Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program for “The Traitors,” while Jimmy Kimmel won Outstanding Host for a Game Show for “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”

Category changes and new honors

The Academy announced several structural adjustments for this year’s awards. The Outstanding Scripted Variety Series and Outstanding Talk Series categories have been merged into a single Outstanding Variety Series category due to a decline in submissions for both. The Outstanding Television Movie category has been renamed Outstanding Movie, and revisions were made to short‑form, sound‑mixing and music categories.

A new Legacy Award was introduced to recognize programs that have left a lasting cultural impact. “I Love Lucy” became the inaugural recipient during the Sept. 6 ceremony.

What’s next

Details about the ceremony’s presenters have not yet been released. The Academy will update the lineup as announcements are made. Viewers can watch the live broadcast on major networks and streaming platforms, with further viewing options to be posted closer to the event date.
