On America’s 250th birthday, 150 people from 50 countries gathered at Mount Vernon to become United States citizens. The ceremony took place on George Washington’s lawn, where the new citizens were sworn in after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
A Symbolic Ceremony
The event was a celebration of American history and the country’s tradition of welcoming immigrants. The new citizens, who came from countries such as Albania, Bangladesh, and Morocco, were welcomed by re-enactors and historians who spoke about the significance of the occasion.
US Marine Sgt. Diakaria Sangare, who served two deployments, was among those who became a US citizen. He attended the ceremony in his Dress Blue uniform and was visibly moved by the experience.
A New Chapter
The ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the new citizens, who will now be able to fully participate in American society. As they took the Oath of Allegiance, they pledged to defend the Constitution and uphold the values of their new country.
