Working Lands Collaborative Hosts Ranchers Night Out in Sheridan on Nov. 12

On Saturday, November 12, the Working Land Collaborative will hold its annual Ranchers Night Out at the Tasting Library in downtown Sheridan, Wyoming. The event is organized to bring local ranchers, land‑owners, and conservation partners together for a relaxed evening of conversation, education, and fellowship.

Who’s speaking

The program will feature two key speakers from the public‑sector conservation community. Carrie Rogaczewski, manager of the Sheridan County Conservation District, will share updates on county‑wide soil‑health initiatives, water‑conservation projects, and upcoming grant opportunities for ranchers seeking to improve land productivity while protecting natural resources.

Joining her is Andrew Cassiday, a district conservationist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Cassiday will discuss the latest technical assistance programs, including the Conservation Stewardship Program and the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, which help producers adopt practices that reduce erosion, enhance wildlife habitat, and increase carbon sequestration.

Why the event matters

Western Wyoming’s grasslands and sagebrush steppe face increasing pressures from conifer encroachment, invasive species, and climate‑driven shifts in precipitation patterns. These changes threaten the habitat of iconic species such as mule deer and sage‑grouse. By gathering ranchers with conservation experts, the Working Land Collaborative aims to foster practical solutions that protect both the economic viability of ranching families and the ecological health of the region.

During the evening, a guest speaker from Montana will present a brief talk on how similar landscapes are managing conifer encroachment through targeted grazing, prescribed fire, and mechanical removal. The presentation will highlight measurable outcomes, such as increased grass cover and improved forage quality, offering a model that Sheridan ranchers can adapt to local conditions.

Community and networking

Beyond the formal presentations, the night provides ample time for informal networking. Attendees can share experiences, ask questions of the speakers, and connect with fellow ranchers who have successfully implemented conservation practices on their own properties. Light refreshments will be served, and the Tasting Library’s relaxed atmosphere is intended to encourage open dialogue.

Event organizers emphasize that the Ranchers Night Out is not a regulatory forum but an educational gathering. Participation is voluntary, and no mandatory reporting or compliance requirements will be discussed. The goal is to empower ranchers with knowledge and resources that align with traditional family values of stewardship, hard work, and responsible land management.

How to attend

The event is free and open to all interested ranchers, land‑owners, and conservation partners. Registration is encouraged to help the hosts plan seating and refreshments. Interested parties can sign up through the Working Land Collaborative’s website or by contacting the Sheridan County Conservation District office.
