Moore police confirmed that a woman in her 60s lost her life Thursday evening after her car rolled backward in a fast‑food parking lot near SW 19th Street and Telephone Road. The incident occurred after the driver exited the vehicle without placing it in park, causing the car to move and strike her.
Police investigation
According to Clint Byley, public information officer for the Moore Police Department, the vehicle began to roll as soon as the driver stepped out. “When she attempted to get out of the vehicle, the vehicle was not placed in park, and the driver exited the vehicle. The vehicle began to roll, which knocked our victim down, striking her,” Byley said.
The crash is being treated as an accident. Police are still gathering evidence, but early findings suggest no foul play was involved. “This is just a really sad accident, it seems like. Our thoughts and condolences go out to her family and loved ones,” Byley added.
Response and safety reminder
Authorities urge drivers to always engage the parking brake and shift into park before exiting a vehicle, especially on sloped surfaces or in crowded parking areas. Simple precautions can prevent tragic outcomes like this one.
The woman’s name has not been released pending notification of her family. She was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries before succumbing to those injuries.
Community impact
The incident has sparked concern among local residents and business owners about parking‑lot safety. Several nearby establishments are reviewing their lot layouts and signage to ensure clearer guidance for drivers.
Moore Police Department encourages anyone who witnessed the event or has additional information to contact the department’s non‑emergency line.
