Where the Trout Are Always Rising: A Morning at Catamount Creek with Flies and Fresh Mountain Air

There are mornings in Woodland Park when the air is so crisp and the sky so impossibly blue that you feel obligated to do something worthy of it. That was exactly how I felt the first time I pulled into Ute Pass Sporting Clays, tucked into the ponderosa-draped hills just west of town on Highway 24. I had driven past the sign a dozen times and always told myself I’d stop. The day I finally did, I left wondering why I had waited so long.

Sporting clays is sometimes described as golf with a shotgun, and once you’ve walked a course, you understand why. Unlike static trap or skeet ranges, a sporting clays course sends you through a series of stations — each one set into a different slice of terrain — where clay targets are launched to mimic the flight of real birds. Some rise fast like flushing pheasants. Others roll low across the ground like bolting rabbits. A few drop away from you just when you think you have them figured out. It is humbling, exhilarating, and almost immediately addictive.

The facility sits on generous acreage that feels very much like the Colorado foothills it inhabits — rocky draws, open meadows, and stands of pine that shift the wind in unpredictable ways. That natural terrain is not incidental; it is built into the course design. At some stations you are shooting downhill into a canyon. At others you are swinging through a gap in the trees. The whole experience feels far more like being out in the field than standing at a flat, artificial range.

What I appreciated most, especially as someone who had not touched a shotgun since a long-ago weekend at a friend’s family ranch, was how genuinely welcoming the staff are to beginners. There is no condescension here, no assumption that you already know what you are doing. The instructors walk you through safety fundamentals with patience and good humor, get you mounted correctly, and send you after your first target feeling ready rather than nervous. They offer rentals if you don’t own a gun, and ammunition is available on site, so you can show up empty-handed and leave with a full morning’s worth of shooting under your belt.

Groups book the course regularly for corporate outings, bachelor parties, and family reunions — and it is easy to see why. The combination of friendly competition, fresh air, and just enough challenge to keep everyone engaged makes for a day that people actually talk about afterward. If you come with friends, expect a lot of good-natured teasing and at least one person who discovers a previously unknown talent for this.

Woodland Park sits at around 8,500 feet elevation, which means even a summer morning has a pleasant edge to it. Bring a light jacket for the early stations, wear comfortable shoes with some grip for the uneven ground, and plan to stay longer than you think you will. Most visitors end up booking a second round before they leave.

The drive out here from Colorado Springs takes roughly 45 minutes and winds up through Ute Pass with views that are worth the trip on their own. But once you’ve broken your first clay — that satisfying orange burst of dust against a deep blue sky — the scenery becomes almost secondary. Almost.

Whether you are a seasoned shooter looking for a well-designed course in a spectacular setting or a complete newcomer curious about what all the fuss is about, Ute Pass Sporting Clays delivers the kind of morning that makes you feel very glad you live within driving distance of Woodland Park.
