Where the Ferries Run and the Skyline Stunned Me Silent: A Morning at Colman Dock

There is a particular kind of magic that happens at the edge of Elliott Bay just before nine in the morning. The espresso is still hot in your hand, a salt-laced breeze is coming off the water, and somewhere out on the grey-green Sound, a Washington State Ferry is cutting a white line toward the Olympic Mountains. I am standing at Colman Dock, and I am completely, unreservedly delighted to be here.

Colman Dock sits at the foot of Marion Street on Seattle’s central waterfront, right in the heart of downtown. It is the busiest ferry terminal in the United States and, if you ask me, one of the most underappreciated urban experiences in the entire Pacific Northwest. Most visitors walk right past it on their way to the aquarium or Pike Place. That is their loss — and quietly, your gain.

The terminal itself is a beauty. The current structure, substantially rebuilt and modernized over the years but still bearing the bones of its early-twentieth-century character, stretches out over the water on timber pilings. Step inside the passenger waiting hall and you get soaring ceilings, big windows framing the bay, and the low rumble of ferry engines idling below your feet. There is something deeply satisfying about a building that has one clear, honest purpose and does it magnificently.

You do not need a ticket to appreciate most of what Colman Dock offers. Walk out onto the observation deck on the south side and you get one of the finest free views in the city: the downtown skyline stacked up behind you, the Olympic Peninsula spread across the horizon ahead, and the ferries — those enormous, dignified white vessels — sliding in and out with unhurried confidence. On a clear day, Mount Rainier appears to the southeast like something you invented. On a moody, overcast day, the whole scene turns into a Turner painting.

If you do want to actually ride a ferry, the Bainbridge Island route is the one to take. The round trip runs roughly 70 minutes total and costs under fifteen dollars for a walk-on passenger. You will spend that time on the open upper deck watching the city shrink behind you and the forested shoreline of Bainbridge grow ahead. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most scenic commutes on the planet, and you get to do it as a tourist with nowhere particular to be.

The dock is also an excellent people-watching post. Commuters with coffee and laptops, families with strollers, cyclists loading their bikes onto the car deck, day-trippers in good boots — everyone passes through here. There is an egalitarian energy to a working ferry terminal that you simply do not find at an airport or train station. People are moving, but they are not frantic. The water has a calming effect on even the busiest schedules.

Getting here is straightforward. The terminal is walking distance from Pioneer Square, the waterfront streetcar stops nearby, and several bus routes drop you right at the door. Come early on a weekday if you want the full commuter atmosphere, or on a weekend morning when the light on the water is extraordinary and the pace is more leisurely.

Whatever you do, do not let Colman Dock remain just a place you passed on the way to somewhere else. Stand at the railing. Watch a ferry come in. Let the salt air do its work. Seattle reveals herself slowly, and this is one of her finest openings.
