There are breweries, and then there are breweries that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about beer. Breakside Brewery, tucked into the Woodlawn neighborhood of Northeast Portland, falls firmly into the second category. The moment you walk through the door, you understand why this place has earned a devoted following that stretches well beyond the Pacific Northwest.
Breakside opened its doors in 2010 with a straightforward but ambitious mission: brew thoughtful, creative beer without apology. What sets them apart from the crowded Portland craft beer scene is an almost restless curiosity in the brewhouse. Head brewer Ben Edmunds — a James Beard Award semifinalist and genuine brewing intellectual — approaches each batch the way a good chef approaches a seasonal menu. Ingredients are local where possible, ideas are borrowed from every corner of the brewing world, and the results are consistently surprising.
The Woodlawn taproom itself has the comfortable, lived-in warmth of a neighborhood pub that happens to serve world-class beer. Exposed brick, long communal tables, a friendly bar staff that actually knows what’s on tap and why — it all adds up to a place where an hour easily becomes three. On a rainy Portland afternoon (and there are many of those), settling in with a pint here feels less like a tourist activity and more like something a local would do, which is exactly the point.
The beer list rotates constantly, but a few anchors are worth knowing. Their Passionfruit Sour is bright and bracingly tart without tipping into vinegar territory — an ideal entry point if you’re new to sour ales. The Wanderlust IPA, their flagship, manages to be both assertively hoppy and genuinely drinkable, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. And if something experimental catches your eye on the board — a smoked porter, a dry-hopped saison, a barrel-aged collaboration — order it without hesitation. That’s part of the Breakside experience.
The kitchen turns out food that’s several steps above standard bar fare. Their burgers are excellent, the fries are properly crispy, and the rotating specials often reflect the same seasonal sensibility you find in the glass. This is not an afterthought menu designed to soak up alcohol — it’s real cooking that happens to pair well with great beer.
Woodlawn itself is a neighborhood worth exploring before or after your visit. Alberta Arts District is a short drive or easy bike ride away, lined with galleries, vintage shops, and more excellent restaurants. But honestly, once you’re settled at Breakside with something cold in hand and the hum of good conversation around you, you may find you’re in no particular hurry to go anywhere at all.
Breakside Brewery is located at 820 NE Dekum Street in Portland. They also have additional taproom locations, but the Woodlawn original is where the spirit of the place lives. Check their website for current tap lists and hours before you go — and go hungry.
