Where Every Cast Tells a Story: Fly Fishing the Elm Fork at Lake Lewisville’s Tailrace

There is something quietly remarkable about standing at the edge of a North Texas reservoir at dawn, coffee cooling in your hand, watching the sky turn from charcoal to peach over the water. The Copperas Creek Boat Ramp and Day Use Area on the western shores of Lake Lewisville is not a flashy destination. It does not have a gift shop or a mascot. What it has is something rarer: genuine, unhurried beauty on the edge of one of the largest lakes in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and enough space to feel like you have the whole world to yourself.

Located off Turbine Drive near the FM 720 corridor, this Army Corps of Engineers managed site sits in one of the quieter stretches of the lake’s sprawling 29,000 acres. Getting here is straightforward — head northwest from downtown Lewisville, follow the signs past the rolling cedar and mesquite, and within minutes the city noise fades completely. The parking area is generous, the launch ramp is well-maintained, and the grassy day-use zones slope gently toward the waterline in a way that makes you want to unpack a folding chair and simply stay awhile.

Boaters love this ramp for its accessibility during busy summer weekends when other launches are stacked deep with trailered vessels. But you do not need a boat to make the most of a morning here. Bank fishing along the rocky points is genuinely productive. White bass, largemouth, and catfish are all regular catches depending on the season. Bring a medium-action spinning rod, a handful of soft plastics or live bait, and a little patience, and you are likely to have a story to tell by lunchtime.

What sets this spot apart from the more heavily trafficked recreation areas around the lake is the atmosphere. Families spread blankets on the grass while kids skip stones. Couples walk the shoreline path as herons stalk the shallows nearby. On weekday mornings, you can go a full hour without hearing anything louder than a boat engine disappearing into the distance. That kind of stillness is genuinely hard to find this close to a major metro area.

Spring and fall are the sweetest times to visit. The wildflowers push through the caliche soil in April, and the autumn light on the water in October has a warmth that almost demands a photograph. Summer works too — arrive early, bring sunscreen, and plan to be back at your car before the midday heat settles in. There are covered picnic shelters for those who want to linger into the afternoon without baking.

No admission fee is required for day use during most of the year, which makes this one of the most accessible outdoor experiences in the entire region. Pack a cooler, bring the kids or the dog, and spend a few hours remembering what a genuinely uncomplicated good time feels like. Lake Lewisville’s western shore has been waiting, and it turns out the wait is absolutely worth it.
