Where Every Cast Tells a Story: Fishing the Shores of Lavon Dam at Lavonia Park

There is something quietly remarkable about a place that asks nothing of you except that you slow down. Lavonia Park, tucked along the eastern edge of Garland near the Lavon Dam spillway, is exactly that kind of place — and once you find it, you will wonder how it stayed off your radar for so long.

Situated where Garland meets the broader landscape of Collin County, Lavonia Park sits on the banks of Lake Lavon’s outlet, just downstream from the dam itself. It is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is free to access, which already puts it in a rare category around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Drive east on Highway 78 out of Garland, follow the signs toward the dam, and within minutes the suburban grid falls away and you find yourself on a tree-lined road leading to picnic shelters, open green space, and some of the most reliably productive freshwater fishing in North Texas.

The spillway below Lavon Dam is the star attraction here. Anglers have been making the pilgrimage to this stretch of water for decades, and for good reason. The turbulent, oxygenated water that flows from the dam creates an ideal environment for white bass, hybrid stripers, blue catfish, and channel catfish. During the spring white bass run — roughly February through April — the action can be genuinely spectacular, with fish stacked in the current and willing to strike on nearly anything you throw at them. Bring a light spinning rod, some curly-tail grubs or small inline spinners, and prepare to have your afternoon completely rearranged.

But fishing is only part of the appeal. Even if you never pick up a rod, Lavonia Park earns a visit on atmosphere alone. The Corps of Engineers maintains the grounds well — mowed lawn, shaded picnic tables, clean restrooms, and a concrete boat ramp for those who want to venture out onto the lake proper. Families come for weekend cookouts. Birdwatchers arrive early with binoculars because the riparian corridor below the dam draws herons, egrets, cormorants, and migrating shorebirds in impressive numbers. Photographers find the spillway light particularly beautiful in the late afternoon, when the sun catches the white water and everything turns gold.

There is a simple, unhurried rhythm to a day at Lavonia Park that feels increasingly rare. It is not curated or packaged. There are no wristbands, no timed entry, no social-media-optimized installations. It is just open water, old trees, the sound of moving current, and the particular pleasure of a place that has been quietly doing its job — giving people somewhere genuine to go — for a very long time.

Pack a cooler, bring the kids, grab a fishing license from any local sporting goods store, and give yourself at least a half-day. Lavonia Park rewards the unhurried visitor, and the drive out there, past the farms and open sky on the eastern edge of Garland, is its own small pleasure. This is North Texas at its most unassuming and most honest — and that, it turns out, is more than enough.
