Where Dim Sum Dreams Come True on a Sunday Morning in Stamford

There is a particular kind of magic that happens inside Dim Sum Palace on a Sunday morning. The room is loud in the best possible way — carts wheel past, bamboo steamers release little clouds of fragrant vapor, and families crowd around large round tables piled high with small plates of things you absolutely need to try. If you have never experienced proper Hong Kong-style dim sum, this is the place in Stamford to begin. And if you have? Well, you already know why you keep coming back.

Dim Sum Palace sits in the Newfield Avenue corridor, a stretch of Stamford that quietly punches above its weight when it comes to authentic, unpretentious food. The restaurant is spacious — genuinely spacious, not “we squeezed in a few extra tables” spacious — and that breathing room matters when you are in for the long haul of a leisurely dim sum brunch. The décor is traditional without being kitschy: red lanterns, white tablecloths, and the kind of comfortable lighting that makes everything feel festive even before you have ordered a single thing.

Now, about the food. The har gow here — those delicate shrimp dumplings wrapped in translucent rice flour skin — are the benchmark by which all others should be judged. The skin has just the right amount of give, the shrimp filling is clean and fresh, and they arrive at the table piping hot from the steamer. The siu mai, little open-topped pork and shrimp dumplings crowned with a dot of orange roe, disappear from the table with almost embarrassing speed. Order a second round. You will not regret it.

Beyond the classics, Dim Sum Palace does a remarkable job with its turnip cakes, pan-fried to a golden crust on the outside while staying soft and savory within. The egg tarts — custard-filled pastry shells that arrive warm and wobbling slightly — are among the best I have found in Connecticut. Save room. Seriously.

The tea service is taken seriously here too. Jasmine, pu-erh, chrysanthemum — your server will ask your preference as soon as you sit down, and refills come reliably without you needing to flag anyone down. It is a small thing, but it signals the kind of attentiveness that elevates the whole experience.

Sundays do get busy, particularly between ten in the morning and one in the afternoon. Arriving by nine-thirty will get you a table without a wait and lets you experience that quieter first hour when the carts are freshest and the kitchen is at full stride. Groups of four to eight will find dim sum particularly rewarding here — more people means more dishes, more variety, and more of those wonderful moments where someone points at a passing cart and says, “what is that?” and everyone reaches for their chopsticks to find out together.

Dim Sum Palace is the kind of place that makes a neighborhood feel like a destination. Whether you are a Stamford local who somehow has not made it here yet, or a visitor looking for something genuinely memorable beyond the downtown corridor, this is a meal worth planning your morning around.
