What Exactly Is There to Do at Raven Run? Try McConnell Springs

If you’ve got a dog in Lexington and you haven’t been to the off-leash area at Masterson Station Park, the question is: why not? It’s one of the largest dog parks in the city, sits on the northwest side of town off Leestown Road, and on a Saturday morning it runs like its own small neighborhood — people who know each other’s dogs by name, regulars who’ve been coming for years, the occasional first-timer trying to figure out where to park.

The park itself covers several hundred acres of former farmland, and most of that is open to the public for walking, disc golf, and soccer. But the dog park occupies its own fenced section near the main entrance, divided into two areas: one for larger dogs, one for smaller breeds. Both sections have water stations, waste bag dispensers, and enough open grass that a energetic lab or border collie can actually stretch out. The ground is mostly grass with some worn dirt paths where traffic is heaviest near the gates.

There’s no fee to use the dog park — Masterson Station is a Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government park, so it’s free and open to the public year-round. Hours run from dawn to dusk. The parking lot is straightforward; when you pull in off Leestown Road, follow the signs toward the dog park rather than the main pavilion area. It’s maybe a two-minute walk from the lot to the gate.

What makes it worth the trip, beyond the basics, is the scale of it. A lot of urban dog parks feel cramped, like everyone’s standing in someone else’s yard. This one gives dogs room to actually run, which matters if you’ve got a high-energy animal that needs more than a loop around the block. On weekday mornings it’s quiet — a handful of people, dogs doing their thing. Weekends get busier, especially in spring and fall when the weather cooperates. Summer middays are the one time to avoid it; the sun hits the open sections directly and there’s minimal shade.

The park is well-maintained by city standards. Staff comes through regularly, and the regular users tend to keep it clean. That said, it’s an outdoor dog park — boots over nice shoes are a reasonable choice after rain.

Masterson Station as a whole is worth knowing about even if you don’t have a dog. The disc golf course runs through the park’s wooded and open sections and is free to use — just bring your own discs. There are also wide paved paths good for walking or jogging, a couple of picnic shelters, and views of the surrounding horse farm landscape that remind you you’re still in the Bluegrass, even this close to the interstate.

The address is 3051 Leestown Road. It’s on the northwest edge of the city, past the old Coldstream area, and GPS handles it without confusion. If you’re new to Lexington and wondering where people with dogs actually go on weekends, this is a big part of the answer.
