West Hollywood City Council Unanimously Approves Protections for Polyamorous Relationships

On Monday, the West Hollywood City Council voted unanimously (5‑0) to adopt a new ordinance that extends city‑law protections to “multipartner domestic relationships.” The measure, which took effect 30 days after adoption, allows qualifying partners in relationships involving three or more adults to sign a statement with the city clerk and receive certain rights, including hospital and jail visitation.

Ordinance language and intent

The ordinance declares, “It is hereby declared as the public policy of the City of West Hollywood that it is necessary to recognize and protect the right and opportunity of all persons to have multi‑partner domestic relationships formally recognized and respected, and to be free from discrimination on account of their partnership in a multi‑partner domestic relationship.” It further notes that “diverse relationship structures, including relationship structures involving more than two adults engaged in a loving, committed, and consensual relationship, are becoming increasingly common.”

Limits of the new protection

While the ordinance grants certain civil protections, it does not elevate polyamorous relationships to the status of marriage or a registered domestic partnership under state or federal law. The city acknowledges that such recognition would conflict with existing state statutes and the Constitution.

Local reaction and broader context

West Hollywood joins a small group of municipalities that have taken steps to protect multi‑partner relationships. Earlier this year, the city passed an anti‑discrimination ordinance aimed at preventing bias against polyamorous households. The latest measure builds on that foundation by providing concrete procedural rights.

Critics of the ordinance voiced concerns about potential social impacts. Brad Wilcox, a professor at the University of Virginia and senior fellow at the Institute for Family Studies, warned that legal recognition could normalize households where children live with adults who are not related by birth or adoption, a situation he says research links to higher risks for children. He also argued that the policy could pave the way for polygamy, which he believes fuels gender inequality and harms child well‑being.

City response

City officials emphasized that the ordinance is a matter of protecting individual liberty and preventing discrimination. “Our goal is to ensure that all residents are treated fairly under the law, regardless of how they choose to structure their personal relationships,” a spokesperson for the West Hollywood communications department said. The city has not yet released a detailed implementation plan, but indicated that the clerk’s office will begin processing statements from qualifying households within the next month.

What this means for residents

For West Hollywood residents in multi‑partner relationships, the ordinance provides a clear avenue to obtain official acknowledgment of their household for specific purposes, such as visitation rights in medical or correctional facilities. It does not, however, affect issues like tax filing status, inheritance, or other legal benefits reserved for marriage or state‑recognized domestic partnerships.

Community members who oppose the measure are encouraged to attend future council meetings to voice their concerns, while supporters can expect the city to monitor the ordinance’s impact and report back to the public later this year.
