West Greene’s Joel Grimes Sets New School Record at Mingo Classic

West Greene High School sophomore Joel Grimes delivered a standout performance at the Mingo Classic on Thursday, finishing fourth overall and shattering his previous school record in the 5K (3.1‑mile) race. Grimes crossed the finish line in 16:42.90, improving on his former best of 17:04 and cementing his status as one of the district’s top distance runners.

Record‑breaking effort

The Mingo Classic, held at Mingo Park in Finleyville, attracted a deep field of 163 runners representing Class 1A, 2A, and 3A schools. Grimes’ time not only earned him a top‑four finish but also set a new benchmark for West Greene, underscoring the strength of the school’s cross‑country program.

Team results

West Greene’s collective effort placed the Pioneers third overall in the Class 1A competition with 62 team points. Eden Christian captured the team title with 30 points, while Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) finished second with 43 points. The Pioneers’ solid showing reflects the dedication of the coaching staff and the athletes’ commitment to hard work and discipline.

Other notable performances

Grimes’ teammate and fellow 10th‑grader Kameron Hackney finished 35th with a time of 18:06.43, while senior Landen Hill placed 95th in 20:12.19. The West Greene top six also included William Rohrer (115th, 22:26.30) and Andrew Cain (156th, 31:33.40).

Leading the pack ahead of Grimes, Sewickley Academy’s Zachary Sharara took first place in 15:48.49, followed closely by Chartiers Valley’s Cooper Knorr (15:52.37) and Isaac Doerfler (16:38.14). Waynesburg Central senior Will Maxwell finished 26th in 17:48.45, with teammate Ian Marshall 84th in 19:46.17.

Among the female competitors, Gateway junior Piper Munyon won the overall race in 18:17.18, ahead of Chartiers Valley’s Sophia Cantos (19:35.70) and Canon‑McMillan’s Karina Stoner (19:37.7). West Greene’s Maggi Courtwright led the Lady Pioneers, finishing 45th in 22:35.77, while teammate Norah Henderson placed 82nd in 24:43.53.

Looking ahead

Grimes is now setting his sights on a second appearance at the state championship meet, aiming to build on his record‑breaking run and help West Greene contend for a top finish at the state level. The Pioneers’ strong showing at the Mingo Classic bodes well for the upcoming season and highlights the talent emerging from Greene County high schools.

With a blend of seasoned seniors and promising underclassmen, West Greene’s cross‑country program is poised to continue its upward trajectory, fostering both athletic excellence and the character‑building values that benefit the broader community.
