WELLS COUNTY, Ind. – Wells County Commissioner Jeff Stringer announced he will resign from the Board of Commissioners effective Jan. 1, 2027, citing family health concerns. The announcement was made by Wells County Republican Party Chairman Preston T. Wright on Oct. 28.
Reason for stepping down
Stringer said he needs to devote more time to his wife, children, parents and grandchildren, whose health issues require his full attention. He emphasized that the decision was personal and not related to any political disagreement.
Service record
Stringer first entered public office in October 2021 when he was selected by a Republican caucus to represent District 3. He won a full term in the 2024 election and has served as president of the Board of Commissioners since that year. His current term was slated to run through Dec. 31, 2028.
Succession process
Because county commissioners are elected countywide, all Wells County Republican precinct committeemen will be eligible to vote in a caucus to choose Stringer’s replacement. The party indicated that the caucus is expected to take place in December 2026, with details on date, time, location and filing requirements to be announced later in accordance with state law.
Transition plan
Stringer will continue to serve through Dec. 31, 2026, and has pledged to help ensure a smooth transition for his successor. The vacant seat will next appear on the ballot in the 2028 election cycle.
District 3 composition
District 3 encompasses Jefferson, Rockcreek and Union townships. Candidates seeking the seat must reside in one of those townships and meet other legal qualifications.
The resignation letter, dated Oct. 22, was received by the Wells County Republican Party on Oct. 28.
