Washington law enforcement faces higher shooting and assault rates than Idaho

In 2025, Washington’s law‑enforcement community endured significantly more violence than its Idaho counterpart. FBI statistics reveal that Washington officers were shot at 80 times, a figure roughly 30% higher than the 16 shootings recorded in Idaho. When adjusted for population, that translates to one officer shooting per 100,000 residents in Washington versus 0.78 per 100,000 in Idaho.

Assaults follow a similar pattern

Assaults on officers also favored Washington. The data show 25 assaults per 100,000 residents in the Evergreen State compared with 21 per 100,000 in Idaho. While the numbers are modest in absolute terms, the relative difference underscores a growing safety concern for Washington’s peace officers.

Staffing shortages exacerbate risk

Washington’s higher exposure to violence aligns with a persistent staffing crisis. For the 15th consecutive year, the state ranked last nationwide in officers per capita, according to the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC). In 2025 the state added only 68 officers while its population grew by more than 79,000 people, widening the gap between law‑enforcement resources and community needs.

FBI figures confirm that Idaho maintains about 15% more officers per capita than Washington—1.55 officers per 1,000 residents versus 1.37 in Washington. The disparity limits Washington agencies’ ability to staff patrols, conduct investigations, and provide de‑escalation options.

Official response

Steven D. Strachan, executive director of WASPC, warned that the shortfall “has negative effects on justice for victims, response and investigation of crimes, wellness for officers and reduces opportunities for de‑escalation.” He emphasized that without sufficient staffing, departments struggle to protect communities and keep officers safe.

The Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs (WACOPS) echoed these concerns, urging lawmakers to fully fund police departments so they can recruit, train, and retain officers. The organization argues that adequate funding is essential to reduce violent encounters, rebuild effective public safety, and safeguard Washington’s neighborhoods.

What’s missing

Attempts to compare sentencing for assaults on peace officers or the frequency of solo responses between the two states were hampered by a lack of publicly available data. Nonetheless, the available statistics paint a clear picture: Washington’s law‑enforcement personnel face higher rates of both shootings and assaults, a situation tied to the state’s ongoing staffing challenges.

Community leaders and policymakers are now faced with a choice—invest in expanding the officer corps and improving training, or risk further erosion of public safety and officer well‑being. As the data suggest, the stakes are high for Washington families who rely on timely, effective police protection.
