On Saturday, volunteers gathered along Evelyn Avenue in Henderson to revitalize five homes in the 1800 and 1900 blocks as part of the annual Make a Difference Day. The effort, organized by Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada, focused on outdoor cleanup, minor repairs and cosmetic upgrades for families in need.
Community partners roll up their sleeves
Michael Frost, a house captain for the project, explained that his role is to ensure each crew has the tools and supplies required while strengthening ties with the neighborhood. “Being a community partner is one of our greatest givebacks. We want to be preferred partners with our community,” Frost said.
Teams painted exterior walls, laid decorative rock, weeded gardens, cleared debris and painted house numbers on curbs. All work was performed at no cost to the homeowners, many of whom are seniors, veterans or individuals living with disabilities.
Make a Difference Day’s broader impact
Make a Difference Day, observed each October, encourages citizens across the United States to volunteer on projects that leave a lasting, positive impact on their communities. In Henderson, the day’s activities highlighted the power of local collaboration between nonprofit groups, civic leaders and everyday residents.
Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada, a nonprofit dedicated to repairing and improving homes for low‑income families, has coordinated similar projects throughout the region. By focusing on modest, high‑visibility improvements, the organization helps preserve home values, enhances neighborhood pride and provides a safer environment for vulnerable residents.
Neighbors applaud the effort
Homeowners expressed gratitude for the free services, noting that the upgrades not only improve curb appeal but also reduce maintenance burdens. One senior resident said the fresh paint and cleared pathways make it easier to navigate the property and welcome visitors.
Local businesses and civic groups also contributed supplies and refreshments, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defines Henderson’s volunteer culture.
Looking ahead
Organizers hope to expand the program in future years, targeting additional blocks along Evelyn Avenue and other neighborhoods in need. The success of this year’s Make a Difference Day demonstrates how coordinated volunteer action can address housing challenges while reinforcing the values of family, faith and individual liberty that shape our community.
