Lakeshore Keepers, the nonprofit that maintains five historic lights along Lake Michigan, is opening applications for volunteer lighthouse keepers for the 2027 season. The program welcomes anyone 18 or older, regardless of prior experience, to spend a week or more living in a lighthouse and providing a warm, informative welcome to tourists from around the world.
What volunteers do
Volunteer keepers are responsible for greeting guests, sharing historical facts about each light, selling tickets and gift‑shop items, and handling basic cleaning and upkeep. In return, volunteers receive on‑site housing for the duration of their shift, allowing them to fully experience life on the water.
Eligibility and support
There are no special background checks or expertise requirements. Lakeshore Keepers states, “You don’t need to be a history buff or know every detail about our lighthouses. We’ll teach you what you need to know and even provide a handy tip sheet. What matters most is your enthusiasm and willingness to provide an exceptional customer experience to our visitors from around the world.”
Locations and schedule
The five lights accepting volunteers are:
- Manistee North Pierhead Light
- Big Sable Point Lighthouse
- Ludington North Breakwater Light
- Little Sable Point Lighthouse
- White River Light Station
Each lighthouse runs a series of weekly “readiness” crews in late spring, followed by a continuous summer season schedule that runs Monday‑to‑Monday from May through early September. A final “closing crew” wraps up operations in early October. Detailed dates for each light are posted on the Lakeshore Keepers website.
How to apply
Prospective volunteers can learn more about the program and submit an application through the Lighthouse Keepers website. The application process includes a brief questionnaire about availability and a short interview to ensure a good fit for the community‑focused role.
Why it matters
These historic lighthouses are treasured landmarks that draw tourists, support local economies, and preserve Michigan’s maritime heritage. By volunteering, individuals help keep the lights operational, educate visitors, and maintain a tradition that has guided sailors for generations. The program also offers a unique, affordable summer experience for families, retirees, students, and anyone seeking a meaningful way to give back to their community.
