Ventura’s Mountain-to-Sea Trail Hiding in Plain Sight: The Ojai Valley Trail’s Southern Stretch

Most people drive through Ventura on their way somewhere else — up the 33 toward Ojai, or north on the 101 toward Santa Barbara — without ever realizing that one of Southern California’s most quietly spectacular multi-use trails runs right alongside them. The Ojai Valley Trail, specifically its southern Ventura segment, is the kind of place that locals guard like a family recipe and visitors stumble onto by accident, then talk about for years.

The trail stretches roughly 9.5 miles from Foster Park in the Ventura River bottom all the way north into Ojai proper, but it’s the southern Ventura end — particularly the stretch running through the Ventura Avenue corridor and into the cottonwood-shaded riverbed — that earns its own conversation. This section winds through a riparian landscape that feels genuinely wild, a corridor of sycamores, willows, and native shrubs that somehow exists just minutes from downtown Ventura’s coffee shops and taco stands.

Park near the Foster Park staging area off Casitas Vista Road, lace up your shoes, and head out. Within the first quarter mile, the noise of the city falls away almost completely. The path is wide, well-maintained, and paved — equally welcoming to cyclists, joggers, dog walkers, and anyone who simply wants to move through open air without dodging traffic. The Ventura River runs alongside much of the route, sometimes reduced to a glassy trickle in summer, but always present, always giving the trail a sense of direction and rhythm.

What makes this stretch particularly special is the way the light moves through the canopy. In the morning, the golden hour hits the canyon walls above the riverbed and turns the whole corridor amber. Birders come out early for good reason — red-tailed hawks, herons, and seasonal warblers make regular appearances. On a clear day, you can see the ridgeline of the Topa Topa Mountains framing the northern horizon, and the Santa Barbara Channel glinting to the south if you catch the right angle at the right moment. It’s that rare trail that gives you both mountain and ocean in a single glance.

The trail is accessible year-round, free of charge, and well-marked. Dogs are welcome on leash. There are no fees, no reservations, and no crowds — at least not the kind that make you feel like you need to book something in advance. On a weekday morning, you may share the path with a handful of regulars and a cycling commuter or two, and that’s about it.

For a longer outing, continue north toward the Soule Park Golf Course area in Ojai and turn back whenever the legs suggest it. The full round-trip from Foster Park to downtown Ojai and back is a satisfying 19-mile ride for cyclists. Casual walkers are happy with any two or three miles out-and-back, which is more than enough to feel genuinely refreshed.

Afterward, drop back into Ventura proper and grab coffee or a late breakfast on Main Street — you’ll have earned it. The Ojai Valley Trail’s Ventura segment is one of those finds that rewards simply showing up. No gear, no agenda, no crowds required. Just open sky, moving water, and the kind of silence that reminds you why you came to the coast in the first place.
