Vancouver Neighbors Alarmed After Kids Damage Halloween Decorations

VANCOUVER, Wash. – A peaceful Halloween evening turned into a source of frustration for residents of the Orchards neighborhood when a video surfaced showing seven children tearing down inflatable decorations that had been set up at a local home.

Jennifer Jenkins, who posted the footage to FOX 12, said the decorations were part of her family’s holiday tradition. “We do this for the kids in the neighborhood. We do it for our grandchildren and for some kids to just think it’s cool to steal that joy from a whole neighborhood; it’s just very frustrating,” she said.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Jenkins reported the incident, and she estimates the damage at nearly $1,000. The incident has sparked broader worries among neighbors about safety and respect for private property.

Long‑time resident Susan Shaw added, “What are these kids doing out at almost midnight on a school night, running around, you know, with sharp objects? These are kids who are running around with knives. And that’s concerning for anybody out in this neighborhood at night.” Shaw and her husband Brad, who have lived in the area for more than two decades, said they have experienced similar vandalism in the past.

Brad Shaw reflected on the possible motivations, “You’re upset with your parents; you’re upset with somebody else. I’m just going to break something. I mean, it absolutely doesn’t make any sense.” He emphasized that the behavior appears to be a misguided outlet for frustration rather than a targeted act.

Since the incident, the Shaws have begun monitoring their own holiday decorations more closely, and both families hope the unidentified youths will cease their destructive actions. “Even though they’re just inanimate objects that can be replaced, it just crushes your spirit to know that somebody can take that so quickly,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins noted she has not yet heard back from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office since filing the report, but she remains resolute in continuing to decorate her home for future holidays. “This incident is not going to stop me from continuing to decorate my home during the holidays,” she affirmed.

Community response

The incident has prompted a conversation among Orchards residents about how to protect private property while fostering a safe environment for children. Many are calling for increased neighborhood watch efforts, better lighting, and open dialogue with local youth groups to address underlying frustrations.

Local law enforcement encourages anyone who witnesses similar behavior to report it promptly, emphasizing that early intervention can help prevent escalation and protect both property and public safety.

As Halloween approaches, families in the area are urged to balance festive celebrations with vigilance, ensuring that the holiday spirit remains a source of joy rather than conflict.
