LAS VEGAS — The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents officially appointed Dr. Chris Heavey as the permanent president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Monday. Heavey has been steering the campus as interim president since April 2025, following the resignation of former president Keith Whitfield.
Board endorsement and contract
Regents Chair Stephanie Goodman said the board’s decision reflects confidence in Heavey’s deep familiarity with UNLV. “Dr. Heavey brings extensive experience and a strong understanding of UNLV,” Goodman said. “As he takes on this role permanently, the Board remains focused on supporting the university’s students, faculty, staff, and continued progress.” The board approved a new employment agreement that formalizes Heavey’s authority and compensation after more than three decades of service to the institution.
Record‑setting performance under interim leadership
During Heavey’s interim tenure, UNLV achieved several milestones. Enrollment rose to a record‑high of nearly 34,000 students, and the university graduated roughly 7,000 students each year. The campus posted its highest graduation rate ever and maintained a near‑record retention rate, signaling strong student satisfaction and academic support.
UNLV also completed its second consecutive seven‑year accreditation review without any recommendations for improvement, underscoring the university’s compliance with rigorous academic standards. Research expenditures hit a new peak of about $134 million, and the institution retained its prestigious Carnegie R1 classification for research intensity as well as its Community Engagement designation.
Strategic focus on workforce development
Heavey’s leadership has emphasized workforce‑focused programs that align with Nevada’s growing economy. The university expanded offerings in cybersecurity, health, mental health, sports management, and insurance and risk management. These initiatives aim to prepare graduates for high‑demand careers while strengthening partnerships with local businesses and community organizations.
Career background
Before becoming interim president, Heavey held a series of senior academic and administrative roles at UNLV, including executive vice president and provost, senior vice provost, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and vice provost for undergraduate education. He is a tenured professor of psychology and earned both his Ph.D. and master’s degrees in clinical psychology from UCLA.
The board’s action follows NSHE policy that allows an interim president who has served at least one year to be considered for permanent appointment. With Heavey now confirmed, UNLV looks to build on its recent successes and continue delivering high‑quality education to the Nevada community.
