Salt Lake City – The University of Utah announced heightened security measures for Greek Row this Halloween after a juvenile was identified following four students and trying to break into a sorority house. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, prompted the university to issue an advisory and coordinate with the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Incident and Police Response
According to Lt. Steve Wooldridge of the Salt Lake City Police, the individual involved has been identified as a juvenile. “We understand there may have been some property damage, and the University of Utah put out information looking for who this person was because they didn’t know who he is,” Wooldridge said. “That person has been identified and the investigation is continuing, and there’s no threat to the public.”
Student Reactions
University sophomore Sam Kofoed expressed shock at the event. “When I first read about it, I was honestly shocked, because I never thought something like that would ever happen,” Kofoed said. “It really brings it to light that, no matter what, there’s always a possibility something could happen.” Kofoed added that the timing was especially unsettling because Halloween is the busiest night for students to gather, dress up, and enjoy time with friends.
Enhanced Safety Measures
In response, the university has deployed additional campus special events officers to patrol Greek Row throughout the weekend. “The more people, the more likely something may happen, so we are making sure there are enough people who can help if something does go wrong,” Kofoed explained. The university emphasized that these precautions are intended to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for all students.
Community Perspective
Greek life members said they will remain vigilant and encourage one another to stay together in groups. The university’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to protecting students while allowing them to partake in traditional Halloween festivities.
Looking Ahead
Police continue to investigate the incident, and university officials will monitor the situation closely. Students are urged to report any suspicious activity and to follow the guidance provided by campus safety personnel.
