The University of Cincinnati is working hand‑in‑hand with Cincinnati Police to ensure a safe and enjoyable homecoming weekend for the expected tens of thousands of fans, students and alumni who will flood the Uptown campus.
Increased patrols and coordinated response
UC Police and city officers have already increased patrols around campus and along key routes after a spate of violent incidents earlier this academic year. The partnership includes joint patrols, rapid‑response teams and a clear chain of command to address any emerging threats quickly.
Since August, the university’s daily crime log shows 47 motor‑vehicle thefts, nine assaults and four incidents in which shots were fired near campus. The recent robbery of three students on Shortvine Avenue, which led to the arrest of four juveniles, underscored the need for heightened vigilance.
Safety measures for homecoming events
During the weekend, road closures are planned near Calhoun Street for the homecoming parade that begins at 8 a.m. Saturday. The Bearcats will face Texas Tech at Nippert Stadium at noon, and the university will provide a free shuttle service operating until 2 a.m. to help students move safely between venues.
Students can also use the Bearcat Guardian app, which connects directly to UC Police for real‑time chat and incident reporting. “I do have to walk home at night and even then, I feel safe,” said UC student Alysha Murray. “There are cops out. Again, there are concerns that I have just being a young female at night. But there’s always that.”
University’s commitment
UC Public Safety officials say they are prepared for a busy, fun and safe homecoming weekend. The coordinated effort reflects a broader commitment to protect the campus community while preserving the festive spirit of the tradition.
Local residents and business owners have welcomed the increased police presence, noting that a safe campus contributes to a vibrant downtown economy during the homecoming surge.
As the university and city continue to collaborate, the focus remains on deterrence, rapid response and clear communication, ensuring that the celebration of Bearcat pride proceeds without incident.
