Pine Bluff, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) celebrated the grand opening of its 77,000‑square‑foot Student Engagement Center on Tuesday. The two‑story building brings recreation, wellness, and essential student services together under one roof, offering a vibrant new hub for the campus community.
Recreation and wellness amenities
The center boasts a four‑lane bowling alley, a gaming area, and a fully equipped fitness center that includes Pilates and Zumba studios. A performing‑arts venue with seating for up to 920 people provides space for concerts, lectures, and community events.
Student support services under one roof
Beyond entertainment, the facility houses career services, counseling, healthcare resources, and other support programs designed to help students succeed academically and personally. Chancellor Anthony Graham emphasized that the building’s purpose is to place students at the center of the university’s mission.
“Yes, this building is impressive without question, but its greatest distinction lies in its purpose and its design. It places students at the center of what we do,” Graham said during the opening ceremony.
Student involvement in funding
What makes the project unique is the direct role students played in bringing it to life. Through a student‑approved fee, students contributed financially, giving them a stake in the new addition. Student Government Association President Dmya Flint expressed excitement for her peers.
“To just see my peers here, see my peers, be able to come in here, come into a new building, a new space, a new vibe and a new experience, I know that they will love it and I’m so grateful that I get to experience it with them,” Flint said.
Flint also honored alumni who long advocated for improved campus facilities, noting that generations of graduates “tried and tried and tried for us to get infrastructures like this.”
Funding sources and future plans
The project was financed through a combination of student fees, federal Title III funding, state support, and prior university leadership initiatives. Title III is a federal program that strengthens Historically Black Colleges and Universities by supporting academic programs, campus facilities, and student resources.
University leaders anticipate that the center will boost student involvement, strengthen campus community, and provide resources that support both academic and personal development. Looking ahead, UAPB plans to add a new Health and Allied Sciences Building adjacent to the Engagement Center.
Community impact
For Pine Bluff residents, the center offers a modern venue for events, performances, and wellness activities, further integrating the university into the fabric of the city. Students can now enjoy a state‑of‑the‑art facility they helped create, while the broader community gains a new cultural and recreational space.
The Student Engagement Center opens its doors immediately, inviting students, faculty, and local residents to explore the amenities and services now available on campus.
