Clinton, Miss. – A devastating fire ripped through Brookdale Senior Living on East Northside Drive Wednesday evening, leaving two senior residents dead and prompting a massive emergency response.
According to Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard, the victims were an 82‑year‑old man and an 81‑year‑old woman who lived at the facility. The fire broke out around 5 p.m., quickly spreading to several wings of the building—approximately 45 % of the structure was affected, according to Clinton Fire Chief Levius Buckley.
Firefighters from the Jackson Fire Department, the Hinds County Volunteer Fire Department, and several retired Clinton Fire Department personnel worked together to extinguish the flames. The coordinated effort succeeded in containing the blaze, but the damage rendered the building uninhabitable for the foreseeable future.
Evacuation and Injuries
Chief Buckley reported that 85 residents were evacuated from Brookdale Senior Living. Four individuals required hospitalization, though their injuries were described as non‑life‑threatening. The swift evacuation helped prevent further loss of life.
Official Responses
Representatives from Brookdale Clinton expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We are heartbroken by the loss of two residents as a result of the fire at our Clinton community. Our deepest sympathies are with their families and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, who visited the scene, thanked first responders and urged the community to pray for those affected. “Please continue praying for everyone affected. Thank you to all of the first responders who have quickly sprung into action to help those in need,” Reeves said.
The Mississippi State Department of Health and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency are also assisting with the response and recovery efforts.
Investigation Ongoing
Fire officials confirmed that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Chief Buckley dismissed rumors that the facility’s sprinkler system was inoperable, calling the claim “not factual.”
Local residents and families of the seniors have gathered to offer support and prayers, reflecting the strong sense of community that defines Clinton. As the investigation continues, authorities will work to determine the exact cause and to ensure that similar tragedies are prevented in the future.
