Martin County, Fla. – After a disturbing animal‑cruelty investigation, two tiny kittens discovered buried alive in a local backyard are showing remarkable progress. The kittens, only three weeks old when they were rescued, are now under the care of a foster family while the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast prepares them for adoption.
Rescue and early care
Law enforcement officials say Alba Chavez admitted to burying five kittens in a backyard, some while they were still alive. Two of the kittens were found dead, two survived, and one remains missing. The two survivors were located by investigators and immediately handed over to the Humane Society, which placed them with foster caregiver Jennifer Jagdeo and her family.
Jagdeo recalled receiving a call from the Humane Society on a Friday and taking the kittens into her home that same day. “At first they were a little bit sluggish, a little slower. They hadn’t quite completely figured out the whole walking thing and the eating thing,” she said. “But now it’s a complete turnaround.”
Foster family optimism
Jagdeo is confident the kittens will continue to thrive. “I know they are going to do amazing things over the next couple of weeks with us,” she told WPBF, a Hearst sister station. The Humane Society estimates the kittens will need about two more months of care before they are ready for permanent homes.
“They’re going to continue to grow. They’re going to be big fluffy little kittens and they’re going to find their forever home, and it’s going to be somebody that loves them even more than we do,” Jagdeo added. She described the kittens as “fighters” with a purpose, hoping they will bring joy to a family in need.
Legal action
Martin County jail records show that Alba Chavez remains in custody on animal‑cruelty charges, held on a $100,000 bond. The case underscores the community’s commitment to protecting vulnerable animals and holding offenders accountable.
Anyone interested in adopting the kittens is encouraged to visit the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast website for more information.
